Disability is Not Inability | Kaya Ko, Kaya Mo: The Story of NU Alumna Ma. Theresa Llanes

Ma. Theresa Llanes, a proud secondary school alumna of National University (Batch 1990), is a living testament to the spirit of “Kaya ko, Kaya mo.”

Ms. Llanes fondly recalls her memorable experience as an NU student, sharing that her time at the University was made even more special because she studied alongside her two sisters. Being together on the same campus allowed them to bond closely and support each other through their academic journeys. She also remembers her dedicated teachers who guided her toward achieving an #EducationThatWorks.

Like many students, Ms. Llanes and her family faced financial challenges. With three children studying at the same time, her parents worked hard to provide for their education. Because of this, Ms. Llanes chose to become a working student to help support her studies—an experience that taught her the values of perseverance, responsibility, and determination.

In 1998, Ms. Llanes began her professional journey for 25 years at Carnival Cruise Line ship as a barista, bartender, and wine server. However, a life-changing accident eventually left her bound to a wheelchair.

Instead of letting this setback define her, Ms. Llanes transformed it into her motivation to continue doing what she loves. She became known as the “Barista on Wheels.” Her career took a new turn when Ms. Lhen Martillana invited her to serve drinks for an event hosted by the Lions Club International. What started as a service for 100 guests grew into an event catering to 3,000 people—an incredible milestone that marked the beginning of her new journey.

With the help of an assistant, Ms. Llanes personally prepares every drink—cocktails, mocktails, coffee, and juices—all made with her signature touch. Beyond her events, she also runs a small barista setup in SM Fairview from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, serving her handcrafted beverages to passersby while on her wheelchair.

Her heart for service extends beyond her livelihood. Through her involvement with Hands of God Charity works, a charitable organization, Ms. Llanes volunteers as a barista for various events, sharing her talents and her faith through every cup she serves.

“Sa lahat ng hirap na pinagdaanan ko, inuuna ko lagi si God. Siya ang nagbibigay sa akin ng lakas para matugunan ang lahat ng pangangailangan ko sa buhay—kung paano lumakad, maligo, at kapag may mga events ako, si Lord pa rin ang aking nilalapitan,”
she shared.

Her message to the NU Community is simple yet powerful:

“Be thankful for all the blessings that God has given us. With Him, nothing is impossible—even if we face disabilities or challenges in life. Kung kaya ko, kaya niyo rin.

Ma. Theresa Llanes’ story is a shining example of resilience, faith, and the true meaning of “Kaya ko, Kaya mo.”
