The National University College of Dentistry expanded its reach after inking a memorandum of agreement with the Parañaque City government last February 20, 2020 at the NU MOA. Present in the MOA signing were National U president Dr. Renato Carlos Ermita Jr., College of Dentistry Dean Dr. Ranny Reyes and City of Parañaque Vice Mayor Hon. Jose Enrico Golez.
The partnership aims to provide dental care services in the area most especially to the indigent community of Parañaque City. According to Dean Ranny, one of their objectives is to transform the college from a learning institution to a service institution which will not only teach the students practically but will teach them to help the community.
“If we are to look at the profile of the indigenous people of Paranaque, most of them don’t have jobs because they don’t have teeth, so our goal is to restore them back to the pink of health by restoring their form and function.”
Included on the list of services that will be provided are tooth restorations/pasta, oral prophylaxis, tooth extractions, gum surgery and other services the CDent can offer.
Aside from these, NU also plans to engage with the community through outreach like prevention programs.
“In the Philippines, our caries rate is 98%, and so basically even children aged 9, halos lahat ng ngipin may cavity na, so by doing the preventive aspect, by tying up with their schools we will do preventive programs together with our community dentistry group and our students, lalabas sila and tuturuan sila, like how to properly brush the teeth.”
The college, which is located at the Mall of Asia complex, features some unique facilities such as the in-house dental laboratory where students can construct dentures and do restorations without additional cost. The renewable agreement is up until 2021.
